Common Lectionary:
June 1, 2008: Matthew 7: 21--29
Expanded: Matthew 7: 13--28 |
The theme of this passage
is that good things don't come from rotten things, but only from
good things. The true followers of Jesus do good things. Some
mimic the true followers with fine speeches and actions, but
they are not following Jesus' ways. They are like the illusions
of magic shows that fool those who want to be deceived.

Common Lectionary:
June 8, 2008: Matthew 9: 9--13, 18--26
Expanded: Matthew 9: 1--26 |
The theme of this passage is that God’s mercy is central to his
message. “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” explains his mission
to the shunned and sick, the unforgiven, and why he didn’t need
to come to the religious elite. Sacrificing was a primary part
of Jewish religion, and had become institutionalized at the
Temple in unfitting ways. The trappings of a religion that had
become partners with the government, such as sacrificing and
fasting, feasting, and socializing only with the elite, are not
what God asks of us. |

Common Lectionary:
July 8, 2008: Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
Expanded: Matthew 11:1-30 |
The theme of this passage is that many people won't allow themselves to accept what God offers. Jesus parades them before us: The spectators who never take part in anything. The armchair quarterbacks who analyze but never play the game. The wise who are locked into lofty enigmas with no logical answer, so they can never believe. Those looking for a temporary pastime to amuse them for a time, but never become engaged. Those biased by politics and worldly ways. Those who judge by appearances, but never look at the heart or deeds. Would they recognize a bird if it landed on their arm? The invitation is open for a light load if they could only allow themselves to accept. |
